IP CCTV Systems
Early physical surveillance was accomplished by having people stand in position, or patrol a route to keep watch over particular assets. With the advent of the closed circuit television system (CCTV), a person could be seated at a central location and watch from one to many television monitors to see what’s going on.
CCTV systems have become extremely popular over the last few decades as the technology has improved and become more affordable. The systems are defined by the types of cameras used. There are two common types of cameras in use today the Analog and the IP-based cameras.
An Analog surveillance camera begins with a CCD sensor and then digitizes the image for processing. But before it can transmit the video, it needs to convert it back to analog so it can be received by an analog device, such as a video monitor or recorder. Unlike IP cameras, Analog have no built-in web servers or encoders and require no technical maintenance. These functions are implemented in the recording and/or control equipment. The principle difference between Analog and IP cameras is the method by which the video signal is transmitted and, ultimately, where the video is compressed, or ‘encoded’.
IP-based cameras carry out the same function as Analog ones, but with a host of extra capabilities. IP cameras typically offer better images with higher resolution and more flexibility, allowing users to e-mail video images for consultation. IP cameras work by using an IP network, often the same data network the rest of a company uses. If bandwidth is a problem, a separate network using category 5 wiring can be used. Either way, video information is recorded on a server, which means video data can be located on-site or in a remote location.
